The Simple Ways to Wealth with Mindful Living
We had been using AT&T until last year. We didn’t make many phone calls, but the bills were between $30 to $45 a month. It’s hard to understand their bill. Pages and pages long. And taxes. I felt that we paid way too much for the amount of time we use. I have been using Skype to make phone calls to Taiwan, using a USB phone connected with my computer. I like Skype, it’s cheap or even free if you both are users. But your computer needs to be on in order to make phone calls or to receive incoming calls. I was looking for another alternative to replace AT&T service as my home phone. I found Joiphone.
Joiphone provides VoIP service, voice over Internet Protocol. If you have cable internet or DSL, you can use VoIP service. They will send you an adapter to connect with your cable/DSL modem and your regular telephone. You don’t need to use your computer to make or receive calls, just use your regular phone the way you used to. They have several plans:
100 minutes plan–$6.95/month ( if you pre-pay a year, or $9.95 month to month), each additional minute costs only 2 ¢. Low international rate, 2~3¢ per minute for most countries. They will not send you paper statement, instead they email you.
Unlimited calling within USA and additional 9 countries–$8.95/month ( if you pay yearly, or $17.9/month paid monthly)–including Argentina, Canada, Denmark, Portugal, Cyprus, Ireland, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom. This is their new promotion. I like this new plan, with unlimited calling if you pre-pay a year, you don’t need to worry about telephone bills for a whole year. They didn’t have this plan when I signed up, so I chose the 100-minute plan.
Joi to the world–$14.95/month–unlimited calling in USA plus 800 minutes free to 40 additional countries and 50 destinations.
They have other plans, including adding a virtual phone number, adding 2nd number, adding toll free number. And all plans include 40 calling features for free, like caller ID, voice mail via phone, voice mail via web, 911 and 411, 3 ways calling, fax to email. Their customer service is good, very easy to reach a live person.
I save about $500 a year by switching my phone service to them from AT&T. You can keep your current number too, just email them with your info, telephone company, account name and address, telephone number, and it takes only a couple of days or so to transfer.
If you don’t live in the United States, they now also accepts international orders, $8.95/month unlimited calling from any country.

Hi Abha, i think ‘BroadVoice Voip service” is also good. I’ve been using it for almost 2 years and i pay around 28 bucks monthly, included unlimited local, in-state AND world calls. It works for me since i use more than 1000 minutes every month and i don’t have to worry about counting minutes. It offers the same features as well.

Hi Claudia,
Thank you for recommending another VOIP service. It’s good to have more good services to choose from. It depends on how many minutes you use, I think the Joi to the world plan at $14.95/month from Joiphone, which includes unlimited calling in USA plus 800 minutes to more than 40 countries, may still be cheaper than your current service provider. And you don’t need to worry too much about counting minutes, because even if you talk more than 800 minutes in international phone calls, each additional minute cost only 2 or 3 cents in most countries. But as long as you are happy with their service, a few dollars saving isn’t that important.
